Wichita State University names Greteman Group intern 2011 Shocktoberfest Woman of the Year
WICHITA, Kan.- Greteman Group strategic communications intern Rachel Groene came to work Monday and found her desk covered in black-and-gold streamers and a bottle of champagne waiting to be popped.
“We had to do something to properly toast the 2011 Shocktoberfest Woman of the Year,” says Ashley Bowen Cook, Greteman Group associate vice president. “Rachel gives so much, we weren’t a bit shocked to have WSU honor her in this way.”
Shocktoberfest serves as Wichita State’s annual celebration of Shocker spirit and pride. A series of weeklong, competitive events give students and student groups the chance to earn points. The overall winners of the various competitive activities, as well as Shocktoberfest Man and Woman of the Year are named at the closing ceremony. This is Shocktoberfest’s 20th anniversary,
Each year, one junior or senior male and female are chosen as the 2011 Shocktoberfest Man and Woman of the Year. This year’s competition received an overwhelming response from the student body with 22 women and 12 men competing; more applicants than ever.
“The judging panel of Wichita State University faculty, staff and alumni had a difficult time narrowing the deserving applicants down to the top four male and top four female finalists,” says Megan Junk, Rhatigan Student Center Activities Advisor.
Groene, a senior, is working toward a major in marketing. On campus, Groene is president of the sorority Delta Gamma, president of Greek honorary society Order of Omega and founding member of Barton International Group. She also holds membership within Golden Key Honor Society, Barton School Dean’s Ambassadors and Student Ambassador Society. Groene was named WSU’s 2008 Clay Barton Scholar.
